چکیده

Plasma shaping effects on temperature gradient-driven instabilities and geodesic acoustic oscillations are investigated with a gyrokinetic theory and a local magnetohydrodynamics equilibrium model. In specific, we focus on the effect of the elongation κ , including its radial derivative ( )( ) r r s ∂ ∂ = κ κ κ , in the large aspect ratio limit. An analytical formula of the dependence of the GAM frequency on the elongation is given. It is found that the GAM frequency sharply decreases with an increasing elongation by dependence of ( ) ( ) [ ] 2 / 1 2 1 2 + − κ κ s , which comes from the modification of classical ion polarization balanced by that of curvature drift polarization. The dependence of the critical threshold of the ETG/ITG instability on the elongation is numerically studied and a semi-analytical formula is given as ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) [ ] 1 11 . 0 1 36 . 0 1 1 , 0 − + + = = = κ κ κ κ s L R L R s Tc Tc .

Effects of plasma current on nonlinear interactions of ITG turbulence, zonal flows and geodesic acoustic modes

The mutual interactions of ion temperature gradient (ITG) driven modes, zonal flows and geodesic acoustic modes (GAM) in tokamak plasmas are investigated using a global nonlinear gyrokinetic formulation with totally unconstrained evolution of temperature gradient and profile. A series of numerical simulations with the same initial temperature and density profile specifications is performed usin...

High frequency geodesic acoustic modes in electron scale turbulence

Experimental investigations has elucidated on the complex dynamics of the low to high (L-H) plasma confinement mode transition. Evidence of interactions between the the turbulence driven E⃗ × B⃗ zonal flow oscillation or Geodesic Acoustic Mode (GAM) [1], turbulence and the mean equilibrium flows during this transition was found. Furthermore, periodic modulation of flow and turbulence level with t...

Kinetic temperature gradient driven modes in inhomogeneous plasmas

New unstable temperature gradient driven modes in an inhomogeneous plasma are identified. These modes represent transient ω ≃ k‖v (e,i) th sound oscillations in magnetized plasma that are kinetically destabilized via Landau interactions. Electron and ion sound branches are unstable for large values of the Larmor radius parameter k⊥ρe,i ≫ 1, respectively. The instability occurs due to a specific...

Effects of non-circular tokamak geometry on ion-temperature-gradient driven modes

The influence of plasma elongation and Shafranov shift on the stability of electrostatic ion-temperature-gradient driven modes (ηi-modes) is investigated. An advanced fluid model is used for the ions together with Boltzmann distributed electrons. The derived eigenvalue equation is solved both analytically, in the strong ballooning limit, and numerically. It is found that the effects of elongati...
